talkSPORT’s coverage of this summer’s Fifa World Cup in Brazil has helped the station post the highest ever listening figures in its history, with 3.4 million sports fans tuning in each week, according to industry figures released by RAJAR on Thursday.

The official industry figures cover the second quarter of the year from 31st March to 22nd June, which included the climax of the 2013/14 Barclays Premier League season and the start of the World Cup.

The station, which was the only UK broadcaster to broadcast every match of the tournament live, recorded overall listening hours of 22.7million per week, a 17% year-on-year increase.

The figures show a 30% jump in hours and a 35% leap in listeners from when talkSPORT last broadcast the FIFA World Cup in Q2 2010, resulting in the station recording its highest ever Q2 market share.

The station’s flagship show, The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, scored its largest audience ever – with 1.5 million tuning in every week.

Calum Macaulay, talkSPORT managing director said: ‘This is a fantastic day for talkSPORT and a great testimony to a hugely talented programming team. The record numbers also reflect our consistent and continued investment into talent and rights.’

‘Our FIFA World Cup coverage was superb and that followed on from another season of exhilarating Barclays Premier league commentaries on the station.  We continue, through brilliant sports content, to attract a young and very upmarket audience with an ABC1 male profile higher than 5 Live. We have also seen our position in the London market grow significantly.’

‘It’s great news for the station and our advertisers.’
