Supermarket giant Tesco has struck a sponsorship deal with the Football Association with the specific remit of supporting the development of women’s and girls’ football in England.

As ‘official England supermarket’, Tesco will also work with The FA on a range of initiatives for official England products around the team’s participation in major tournaments.

Tesco will be the title sponsor of The FA Women’s Premier League and The FA Women’s Premier League Cup, and the supermarket also gains various advertising and branding rights at England women’s internationals and The FA Women’s Cup.

The overall agreement will also see the parties work together on a joint grassroots football initiative to be announced in due course.

In becoming an FA sponsor, Tesco joins the likes of E.ON, Nationwide, Carlsberg and McDonalds in signing up to the governing body’s new commercial partner structure post-2006 World Cup.

It is unclear how much Tesco has paid for its FA tie-up although the deal will run for the next three years.
