The R&A, organiser of The Open, has announced a record prize purse for the 2024 edition of the major golf championship.
The 152nd edition of the tournament will offer a total prize fund of $17m (£13m), marking a $500,000 (£383,500) increase on last year.
This year’s Open, which tees off on 18th July and runs until 21st , will be staged at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland, for the tenth time.
At this year’s championship, the winner will receive a $3.1m (£2.4m) payout, with second and third placed players earning $1.76m (£1.35m) and $1.13m (£870,000) respectively.
The 70 players who reach the final two rounds of the competition will each be paid a minimum of $38,900 (£29,839). Only professional golfers will be eligible to receive prize money.
Of the non-qualifiers after the opening two rounds of The Open, the leading ten professional players will earn $12,350 (£9,473). The next 20-placed golfers will get $10,300 (£7,901), and the remainder $8,750 (£6,712).
“The R&A has a responsibility to strike a balance between maintaining The Open’s position in the global game, providing the funds required for governance and developing amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries internationally,” said Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A.
“We have to make choices if we want to continue to build on the significant growth in participation that is essential for golf’s future.
“We remain concerned about the impact substantial increases in men’s professional prize money are having on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability.
“We are determined to act with the interests of the global game in mind as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive in 50 years’ time.”
