The route for the 101st edition of the Tour de France has been confirmed, starting with three stages in Britain, with next year’s route set to include five mountain finishes, with nine challenging cobbled sections on stage five in northern France, as well as one individual time trial.

The Tour will begin in Yorkshire on 5th July where riders will cycle the 191km from Leeds to Harrogate before travelling the 198km from York to Sheffield the following day. This will be followed by the return of the tour to London for the first time since 2007 when the peloton will make its way from Cambridge to the Capital on 7th July. It will be the fourth time that cycling’s biggest event will pass through the UK, with previous visits in 1974, 1994 and 2007.

Leaving the UK, the peloton will then arrive in Ypres in recognition of 100 years since the start of World War One. The riders will then make their way down to the climbing stages in Eastern France before heading to the Alps, across the Pyrenees and finishing with the traditional 21st stage at the Champs-Elysees.

Chris Froome, the winner of last year’s tour, said he was excited about the crowd that will turn out to support the British riders: ‘I was bowled over at the support we had in France so I can only imagine what it is going to be like over in Yorkshire. It is going to be massive. It certainly gives a little bit of added pressure too I’m sure.’
