Beyond Sport has announced that Archbishop Desmond Tutu, one of the most recognised activists in the world, has agreed to become the global organisation’s Official Patron, helping it in its mission to promote, develop and support the use of sport to create positive social change across the world.?

In his new role, the Archbishop will spread the word about the global initiative and its work as it builds up to the third annual Beyond Sport Summit, taking place in Cape Town from December 5-8.

The four days of the Summit will again use a unique combination of networking opportunities, insightful panels, and action-led working sessions to collide those who use sport as a vehicle to create social impact, with influencers from the world of business, government and federations whose attitudes and decisions can have substantial impact.? ?

The Archbishop has long been a supporter of the Beyond Sport initiative having participated in the inaugural Summit held in London in 2009.? ?

Speaking about his experiences at the Summit, Tutu said: ‘I’ve witnessed first-hand the power sport can have on communities and to see so many people in one room talking about they can use this power for good was a humbling moment. Beyond Sport can achieve great things’.?

As Beyond Sport’s Official Patron, Archbishop Tutu joins a host of other Ambassadors, all who bring unique experiences and visions to the Beyond Sport initiative, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair; multi-Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson; Lord Sebastian Coe, Chairman of London 2012; former Bafana Bafana soccer captain Lucas Radebe; and two-time Women’s World Cup winner and former president of the Women’s Sport Foundation, Julie Foudy.?

Beyond Sport is partnered with Barclays Spaces for Sports, TIME International and UNICEF.
