Twickenham has been selected to host the European Rugby Champions Cup final on 2nd May next year, following a successful bid from the RFU for the inaugural event.
European Professional Club Rugby confirmed on Tuesday that the new-look competition, which replaces the Heineken Cup from this season, will conclude at the London venue as it guarantees ‘the best possible financial return to the clubs’.
The European Rugby Champions Cup is the result of a long-running dispute between English and French clubs and the European Rugby Cup (ERC), which consists of 20 teams from the Six Nations countries.
The announcement sees the Italian city of Milan miss out the most, with the San Siro originally scheduled to host the 2015 Heineken Cup final.
The final of the European Rugby Challenge Cup, the second-tier competition, will also be held in London, with Twickenham’s next-door neighbour – Harlequins’ Stoop stadium – hosting the game the day before on 1st May.
