The International Cycling Union (UCI) has proposed that six new cycling events be added to the programme for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The events proposed include bmx freestyling in which riders perform stunts and tricks on their bikes and mountain bike eliminator which has already featured in the 2012 World Cup.

On the track, the individual points race, which was abolished after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, could make a return in favour of the omnium which took its place in 2012.

The International Olympic Committee ‘s executive board will meet in Lausanne on 12th on February to discuss the proposed additions to the Olympic cycling programme.

A statement from the UCI stated: ‘With regards to the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, the Management Committee expressed its support for a proposal to be made to the International Olympic Committee for the addition to the cycling programme of a points race and BMX freestyle and mountain bike eliminator events for both men and women.’

The Olympic track program was altered between Beijing 2008 and London 2012 to create gender parity.
