Football governing body UEFA is set to vote on structural changes to the UEFA Cup competition to make it mirror that of the elite European club tournament, the Champions League.
Under the current format, the second round of the Cup consists of eight groups of five sides, with the top three qualifying.
The proposed revamp would involve a second-round stage of 12 groups of four, with teams playing six matches each and the top two progressing.
UEFA will meet in December to decide if they will proceed with the proposal for the competition.
The 24 qualifying sides would once again be joined by eight Champions League third-placed teams in the knockout stage, which will then comprise of a round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-final and final.
