UEFA has announced that some of the UEFA Euro 2016 competition will be filmed in virtual reality (VR), teaming up with Nokia, according to media reports.

Nokia’s Ozo VR camera was recently tested at the Champions League semi-finals and the governing body is considering a dedicated YouTube channel to show the footage.

UEFA has said that all of England’s matches will be captured whilst some Wales and Northern Ireland matches have been earmarked to be filmed in VR.

In addition there’ll also be one of 8-lens, football-shaped cameras placed inside the players’ tunnel for some games.

The Nokia Ozo retails for £40,000 and captures 360-degree footage, but it’s currently not clear how much footage will be made available to fans.

Bernard Ross, head of UEFA TV, said: “These demonstrations continue to put us at the forefront of broadcast technological innovation.

“It’s UEFA’s goal that one day the watching fan will be able to watch a match through immersive virtual reality.

“They will experience the game as if they are there in the stadium. This demonstration represents the first step towards completing that goal.”
