Due to fears that Manchester United fans will be targeted at the Champions League Final in Rome, UEFA, senior police and Home Office officials are meeting to discuss security for the event.
The outcome of the meeting will be a security plan for the final, to be held at the Stadio Olimpico, and transportation arrangements. This will include designating separate airports for fans and escorts.
The acute attention to security stems from the Manchester Utd match played in 2007, when fans were involved in knife attacks with Roma ‘ultras’.
Last year, the quarter-final Champions League match with Man Utd was completed without violence in Rome. However, an Arsenal fan was stabbed two months ago, and it has been speculated that officials are concerned the final could spin out of control if security isn’t dealt with in a serious manner.
Along with UEFA and Rome senior police, the security meeting also includes Home Office officials, who will deal with United fans attempting to travel illegally after being banned from matches.
