The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has signed a new four-year broadcasting deal with UEFA – who will control the broadcast rights for games and sell the rights centrally from 2014.
Europe’s governing body of football now controls the rights for each of its 53 member countries.
The new deal will generate additional income for the (SFA) for the Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 campaigns.
According to media reports – up to £50m could be earned from the agreement by the SFA, an increase of £4m on the association’s current contract with IMG, which sells on rights for home games and the Scottish Cup.
With the new UEFA agreement, the SFA will also be able to seek additional revenue from rights for the Scottish Cup and home friendlies, both of which currently fall under the terms of the IMG contract.
A SFA statement said: ‘The mandate was achieved last week after a long period of negotiations between UEFA and their 53 member associations. The next step will be for European football’s governing body to take the centralised rights to the commercial market’.
‘The new template will be akin to Uefa’s commercial deals for the Champions League and Europa League and will incorporate the Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 campaigns’.
UEFA has agreed to offer a guaranteed minimum income of £20-£25 million a year, to compensate for the FA losing its most valuable commodity.??The last four-year package the FA owned covered international and FA Cup games – including competitive and friendly internationals – was worth around £575m around the world.
