Sale Sharks chief executive Niels de Vos is to be named as the new chief
executive of UK Athletics forming an elite management team with Edmond Warner
who was appointed as chairman earlier this month.
Like Warner, de Vos has a business rather than an athletics background
although he did serve as commercial director for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in
Manchester where his ability to attract top-tier sponsorship revenue established
his credentials.
The team of Warner and de Vos replace incumbent chief executive David
Moorcroft who confirmed his retirement last September and will leave UK
Athletics on 2 February.
Both appointments were handled by recruitment firm Odgers, Ray &
Berndtson.
According to Simon Cummins, head of sports practice at Odgers, Ray &
Berndtson, the vacancy had attracted international interest from a variety of
industry sectors.
de Vos will not take up his post at UK Athletics until the summer after
seeing out his contract with Sale Sharks which runs through until the end of the
current rugby union season.
