UK Athletics (UKA) has outlined key recommendations in response to the sport’s doping crisis, publishing ‘A Manifesto for Clean Athletics’.
The governing body has made several proposals, including a reset to world records, longer bans for drug cheats, clean athletes compensated for loss of prize money when drug cheats are banned and a public register of tested athletes.
It comes after the doping scandal, which has seen Russia banned from international athletics, with allegations that former IAAF officials also took money to cover up tests from Turkish and Moroccan athletes.
In total, UKA has made 14 proposals in response to the crisis ahead of Dick Pound’s second part of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) independent commission.
UK Athletics Chairman Ed Warner said: “A central theme to our ‘Manifesto for Clean Athletics’ is the need for transparency, and as a result we have chosen to publish the relevant Performance Oversight Committee (POC) recommendations earlier than anticipated to demonstrate our commitment to this cause.
“Now more than ever athletics needs to demonstrate it is prepared to make further changes and go that extra mile to remain at the forefront of clean sport.
“Current best practice does not guarantee future best practice and while the POC have been reassured by the processes we currently have in place, we are all committed to ensuring that we are able to maintain these standards into the future.”
