Varsity Game Set For Date Switch

Oxford and Cambridge Universities are reviewing a plan to switch the annual
rugby Varsity match to a Thursday with a view to attracting a greater number of
fans from the City.

The Varsity match has been played at Twickenham on the first or second
Tuesday of December since 1947 but has suffered from dwindling attendance
figures in recent years.

In a bid to reverse this decline, the universities are planning to move the
game to a Thursday where more of the Oxford and Cambridge graduates working in
the City will be able to take the afternoon off to attend the match.

Despite the falling crowd numbers, the Varsity match did however receive a
sponsorship boost this year with Lehman Brothers agreeing a deal to associate
itself with the game.
