The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has announced a global collaboration with American pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer.
As part of the knowledge-sharing partnership, Pfizer will review newly released drugs and pass on information to WADA about the likelihood that these could be abused by athletes for performance gains.
It will also look for similarities to the pharmacological characteristics between new products and existing performance-enhancing drugs, and look at their effects on the human body.
As part of the deal, WADA will exchange information with Pfizer on banned substances that are currently being abused by athletes.
WADA director general David Howman said: ‘A central aspect of WADA’s strategy is to collaborate with pharmaceutical companies so that medicinal substances of interest to dopers can be identified. In turn, this will allow us to develop detection methods at a much faster rate.’
