Former Welsh rugby international Colin Charvis has helped launch the BG Energy Challenge 2012 – the largest annual charity fundraising event for the UK energy industry.

This year’s Challenge, taking place in Dartmoor National Park from 5th to 7th July, was launched by Charvis at a reception in London, where he was joined by participating and potential teams.

BG Group hopes the Challenge, now in its seventeenth year, will top the £235,000 raised by the event in 2011.

Funds raised will again support two charities, Sparks and CARE International. Sparks, which researches medical conditions affecting babies, children and mums-to-be, will benefit for the fifth successive year while CARE International, the international aid and development agency, has been involved with the BG Energy Challenge since the inaugural event in 1996.

At the launch, companies associated with the energy sector, including Egon Zehnder, Perenco and Hess had the opportunity to register their teams and learn more about the 2012 event.

Spread across three days and nights, the Challenge tests teams’ physical, intellectual and strategic skills with a variety of activities. This year event ambassador, Colin Charvis, will participate as part of the joint charity team.

Charvis, who was capped 94 times for his country and represented the British and Irish Lions, said: ‘I am delighted to be involved with the BG Energy Challenge. The event makes a vital contribution to Sparks and CARE International and is a great opportunity for teams from across the energy industry to come together, have fun, test their limits and fundraise.’

‘I am really looking forward to taking part in this year’s Challenge and sharing in the camaraderie the event is known for. We are going to be put through our paces, but the reward will be well worth it.’

This year’s Sparks President, former footballer David Ginola, added: ‘The BG Energy Challenge is a fantastic event. It is rewarding for those who take part and it raises much-needed funds for two incredible charities; Sparks and CARE International. As president of Sparks, I have seen first-hand the good works those funds allow us to do through vital research, which helps people around the world. I wish all the teams the best of luck and I look forward to joining them later this summer.’
