Walkers has taken the ‘Choir of Champions’ to the streets of Europe to celebrate its official partnership with the UEFA Champions League. The undercover choir surprised members of the public for Round of 16 final match week to help get Europe #GameReady.
To build excitement ahead of this week’s games, Walkers took the UEFA Champions League anthem to Europe’s streets. Renditions of the tune were performed on buses, streets, in city squares and by helicopter, with the Choir of Champions out in Madrid, Munich and London.
To kick-start the day, Gary Lineker, took to the London skies in a helicopter. The chopper flew over London projecting the anthem to people below. The chopper then landed at London’s O2 Arena where Londoners were given a live rendition on the ground. Watch the video here.
In Munich, a local ‘human statue’ street performer, a choir conductor in silver paint, was sparked into action and in Madrid, a Spanish kiosk was transformed to surprise customers by playing the tune and showering them with ticker tape and glitter.
Meanwhile, commuters on London buses were immersed into a live operatic performance by members of the choir and musicians, secretly scattered throughout the bus. The sequence of events was captured on hidden cameras, CCTV and phones.
Gary Lineker said: “Spreading the UEFA Champions League anthem across London was a lot of laughs. I’m not the best of singers, but hopefully I did the anthem, and the choir, some justice. It took a lot of persuading and peer pressure to get me up in the helicopter given I’m not the biggest fan of heights, but that’s the commitment I have to get everyone game ready.”
Adam Warner, head of UEFA Champions League sponsorship, Walkers, said: “The UEFA Champions League is without a doubt one of the most prestigious football competitions in the world with arguably the most globally known anthem. It was great fun to see the ‘Choir of Champions’ use this to create spontaneous fun times together across the streets of Europe and that’s what Walkers is all about. We’re passionate about football and we wanted to share that passion with fans and get Europe and the world game ready in a fun and entertaining way.”
