Wasps Face Premier Rugby Probe

Premier Rugby has confirmed it will meet to investigate Wasps’ refusal to play their league match at Sale last week because of safety fears.

The visitors claimed surface water down one channel of the pitch had made it dangerous, although both Sharks and the referee said the pitch was playable.

Wasps are set to contest any penalty sanctions imposed by Premier Rugby.

The Premiership’s umbrella organisation for top-flight clubs said it will make a statement ‘in due course’ after requesting a full report from referee David Rose.

Although Rose was happy for the game to go ahead at 19:45pm, 15 minutes after the scheduled kick-off time, Wasps officials and players were back on their coach and had left the ground by 19:30pm.

‘The situation is that Wasps didn’t want to play the game because they felt the pitch was unsafe,’ said Rose.

‘At that point my opinion doesn’t count for anything – I cannot make any team take the field to play.’

It was the third season running that Wasps have been involved in a late postponement – and the RFU is eagerly awaiting the outcome of Premier Rugby’s latest investigation.
