English rugby union clubs, Wasps, London Irish, and Worcester Warriors, have confirmed that they have applied for places in next season’s expanded RFU Championship, ahead of the expression of interest deadline on 6th October.
The Championship is set to become a 14-team league from next season, offering a vital pathway for the clubs seeking to rebuild after financial challenges.
All three clubs entered administration during the 2022/23 season, have been working towards re-establishing their presence in professional rugby.
Wasps have been planning to relocate to a new base in Kent or Greater London, following their departure from Coventry.
London Irish, currently in administration, have seen their preferred bidder, Hokulani Ltd, confirm their application for Championship entry.

Meanwhile Worcester Warriors, who share ownership with Wasps under Christopher Holland, also confirmed their intent to join the league by beginning the application process.
To secure their places in the Championship, the clubs will need to meet strict financial viability criteria. This includes proving they possess the necessary funds to repay rugby creditors and ensuring they adhere to minimum operating standards.
This application process marks an important step in the potential resurgence of these ‘phoenix’ clubs, with the prospect of a future return to the Gallagher Premiership, which has recently reintroduced promotion and relegation.

“From securing key assets to laying the groundwork for a sustainable future, our efforts have always been focused on returning Wasps to a league that shares our values and to be able to compete at the highest level.” Said Wasps owner Christopher Holland
“We have officially submitted an expression of interest to the Rugby Football Union to join London Irish in the Tier 2 league,” added Daniel Thomas Loitz, Director of Hokulani Ltd
“This is a major step in our journey to restore the club to the top level after 12 months of painful suspension.”
