London Wasps has confirmed that the LV= Cup clash with Harlequins will be staged in Abu Dhabi later this month.
The game will become the first ever UK domestic fixture to be played overseas after the go-ahead was given by the LV= Cup tournament organisers, the Rugby Football Union, title sponsors LV=, Premiership Rugby, Sky Sports, the International Rugby Board and opponents Harlequins.
The game has also received the backing of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and the United Arab Emirates Rugby Association, with both looking to promote rugby in the United Arab Emirates.
Eager to boost their profile in the region, both clubs will be engaging with local schools and rugby clubs in the build up to the game.
The decision follows a recent visit to Abu Dhabi by club owner Steve Hayes and board director Lawrence Dallaglio – as part of their ongoing efforts to research stadium development whilst the club continues to pursue their ambitions for a new long term home.
The game, broadcast on Sky Sports, will be played under flood-lights in the grounds of the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, with a specially constructed stadium allowing up to 5,000 spectators.
Wasps has taken precaution not to upset any fans by moving the home fixture by offering supporters who have already bought tickets a full refund, as well as inviting them to attend an exclusive open day with the squad at Adams Park later in the season.
The Rugby Football Union’s tournaments and competitions director, Terry Burwell, said: ‘Taking the game to Abu Dhabi is a great opportunity to strengthen the sport’s presence outside of the eight foundation unions. The LV= Cup is the ideal competition to showcase rugby union on the wider stage.’
