Watford have launched a new anti-discrimination initiative in partnership with Hertfordshire Police.
In a bid to clamp down on discriminatory behaviour, the Premier League club have launched the ‘We’ campaign, which seeks to work with authorities such as Hertfordshire Police’s Hate Crime Unit to identify offenders and bring them to justice.
The scheme urges Watford fans who see discriminatory abuse of any kind – on the basis of race, age, disability, gender or anything else – to call out the behaviour on social media using hashtags #Watford or #BuzzOff. The club also says fans should do this on all days, not just matchdays.
While the news comes on the back of the Premier League’s No Room for Racism campaign, Watford say that their new initiative is not borne out of any frustration with the league-wide initiative, and instead is designed to ensure the club is not reliant on outside organisations or voices, preferring to tackle the issues of discrimination and hate crime head on.
