Watford goalkeeper and keen cyclist Ben Foster took to conference call software to lead his teammates in a virtual spin class as the players train from home.

In order to promote the stay home message, Foster’s teammates, including captain Troy Deeney and his strike partner Andre Gray can be heard encouraging fans to stay indoors and remain safe during the period of social distancing currently in place.

Wearing his distinctive Watford cycling lycra, Foster put a group of first team players through their paces in a 30-minute interval spin class, which was posted on the club’s YouTube channel to encourage fans to ride along with their footballing heroes.

The online event served as a piece of content for Watford partner Sportsbet.io, who worked with the PR team at sponsorship agency Fuse to develop the idea intended to keep the team’s fitness and morale high as well as creating stories for fans.

With the football season suspended, Watford previously offered their Vicarage Road stadium for NHS use during the pandemic. The club is situated in close proximity to the town’s hospital, and pledged to offer its support.

Scott Duxbury, CEO, Watford, said of that decision: “We need to forget football right now and concentrate on doing all we can to support the NHS and, in particular, Watford General Hospital. Our proximity as a football club next door to a hospital puts us in a great position to offer help and we’re keen to do whatever we possibly can to support NHS staff and their families.

“The UK government’s message has been about doing ‘whatever it takes’. Likewise we’ll do ‘whatever it takes’ here at Vicarage Road to offer our fullest support to the NHS and its people at a time when it’s clearly needed most.”
