Wembley Stadium has been awarded the International Organization for Standardization’s highest standard of sustainability for its Event Sustainability Management System (ESMS).

The ISO 20121 standard was developed to coincide with the London 2012 Olympic Games and is designed to help event-related organisations to reduce their environmental footprint.

The ESMS was launched by The FA’s sustainability team (FAST) in 2018 and has been used to make improvements across the stadium in teat time by identifying ways to reduce the stadium environmental impact.

Initiatives including introducing 16 water bottle refill stations around the stadium, carrying out compulsory sustainability training for staff members and eliminating plastic straws have helped Wembley to achieve the standard, as well as installing charging points for electric vehicles outside the stadium.

Jon Sellins, Operations Director, The FA said: “I am hugely proud of this achievement. FAST has worked extremely hard over the past 18 months to obtain the prestigious ISO 20121 certification, and I would like to thank everyone that has played a role in enabling us to get there.

“At The FA, we are committed to leaving a positive legacy for Wembley Stadium. Our ESMS and fantastic FAST members are supporting us to achieve this standard to make Wembley Stadium a world-leading and inspirational venue.”
