Wembley Stadium will host three additional NFL games next year as the sport continues its expansion plans into the UK market, according to NFL UK.

The London venue played host to the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons over the weekend, the second of three matches this season, with NFL UK’s managing director Alistair Kirkwood revealing that the capital can expect three more matches next season.

Kirwood announced: ‘We are going to do three games next year, and looking at staging two games back to back in successive weeks to test this support base.’

‘There are some logistic reasons around the Rugby World Cup that means we won’t be going to four or five.’

Detroit’s Matt Prater kicked a 48-yard field goal in the final seconds to complete an unlikely turnaround in the match against Atlanta, after trailing 21-0 at halftime.

The 13:30 GMT kick-off on Sunday represented the earliest start for American viewers in NFL history – with Pacific coast viewers having to tune in at 6:30am to watch the game.

The third of this season’s matches between Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys will be played at Wembley on 9th November.
