West Ham United’s proposed move to the Olympic Stadium has, as expected, been ratified by the government and the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
The vote was unanimously in favour of the Hammers’ bid, after it was judged to provide the best legacy, by keeping athletics in East London and leaving the existing running track untouched – Tottenham’s bid was widely criticised because of their intention to knock the stadium down and build a new one.
Barry Hearn, chairman of Leyton Orient, the closest football club to the Stadium, wrote a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson asking them to look at the decision to award West Ham the right to move into the stadium, after claims that the move would threaten Orient’s existence.
However, the decision has been rubber-stamped, and West Ham United will move to it’s new home in Stratford once the London Games are over in late 2012.
