West Ham United looks to have beaten Tottenham Hotspur for the backing of Olympic bosses, in their bid for the 2012 Olympic stadium.
The official announcement is expected to be delivered tomorrow by the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC), but according to media reports, the OPLC have decided that the offer from West Ham is more suitable than that of their London rivals.
The final decision will be taken by the government and the London Mayor, but they are expected to back the OPLC’s recommendation.
The two bids have been the source of a lengthy media debate in recent weeks with the primary issue being the retention of the athletics running track.
West Ham’s bid outlines the retention of the athletics track post-2012, as initially outlined in London’s bid document to host the Games, whereas Tottenham’s redevelopment proposals for the stadium would rip the track out.
Should the club eventually win the bid, West Ham would look to recoup its outlay by using the venue for a number of events and concerts as well as football matches.
