Premier League club West Ham is confident that a move to the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 London Games is still on, according to new co-owner David Gold.

‘We believe there is a serious possibility that we could strike a deal that would take West Ham to the Olympic Stadium. If that can be done, we would have a super stadium that could take the club to the next level,’ said Gold.

However, last week Olympics minister Tessa Jowell insisted that athletics remains the stadium’s main purpose.

Gold and co-owner David Sullivan took over West Ham last month and immediately confirmed their interest in relocating the club to the 80,000-capacity Olympic stadium in Stratford.

The Olympic Park Legacy Company is set to invite bids from businesses that want to apply for a commercial stake in the stadium.
