Roger Federer’s victory over Rafael Nadal in the dramatic men’s singles finals
at Wimbledon proved a ratings winner for BBC attracting a peak audience of 7.3
million.
Federer’s fifth consecutive Wimbledon title attracted 46% of the available TV
audience for BBC1 with the average audience for the match levelling out at 4.6
million.
The 7.3 million peak was up on the previous two year’s Men’s Final figures of
7.1 million in 2006 and 5.8 million in 2005.
Later on BBC2’s coverage of the mixed doubles final, which saw success for
Briton Jamie Murray and Serb partner Jelena Jankovic, attracted a 4.9 million
peak with an audience share of 23%.
The substantial TV figures for the finals will have come as a welcome relief
for the BBC given much of the ratings from the earlier rounds had been hit by
the continuing rain delays.
