The All England Lawn Tennis Club will be forced to pay out over £1m in ticket
reimbursements due to the bad weather that ruined Saturday’s play at Wimbledon.

The refund was activated after fans on Centre Court only saw 57 minutes of
action all day, entitling them to their money back. Similarly, Court One
spectators can claim a half refund after seeing 74 minutes of play.

According to the championships policy, had play on Centre Court lasted over
an hour then the refund would have been null and void saving the AELTC over
£500,000.

Saturday saw the worst weather of the championships so far with play starting
almost two hours late and only Amelie Mauresmo and Maria Sharapova completing
their games out of the top seeds.

‘We all share the disappointment and frustration at today’s outcome and thank
everyone for their patience and good humour in the face of the trying
circumstances,’ said All England Club chief executive Ian Ritchie.

‘Although I am sure it will not compensate for the disappointment caused, I
can confirm that the appropriate refund will be paid to the original
purchaser.’
