Payday loans company Wonga has removed its logo from Newcastle United’s children’s kit and training wear as part of an agreement with the club.

Due to kit production schedules, this is not due to take effect until the 2016/17 season.

Darryl Bowman, Marketing Director, Wonga said: ‘As a responsible lender we believe removing our logo from children’s replica shirts and training wear is the right thing to do. We appreciate the club’s support in this matter.’

Managing Director of Newcastle United, Lee Charnley added: ‘We understand and respect Wonga’s position and are happy to support their decision.’

Wonga’s sponsorship of Newcastle United has caused continuous controversy since the deal was agreed in 2012, with campaigners calling for the Premier League club to drop the firm. In 2013 Muslim Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse objected to wearing the shirt due to religious beliefs but eventually agreed to wear the shirt after discussions with Islamic teachers.

Newcastle United kits have carried the Wonga logo since the 2013-14 season as part of a four-year sponsorship deal worth £24m.
