Worcestershire County Cricket Club are looking for a new main sponsor following the collapse of electrical retailer Apollo 2000.

The company, which started in the city 40 years ago, and had been sponsoring the New Road club for over 10 years, has closed its doors this week.

Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton stated: ‘It is a blow and shows that sport is not immune to what is going on. But our thoughts are with those who have lost jobs.’

Newton conceded that the development will leave the club short of money this season.

He said: ‘Our agreement with them ran to the end of the coming season, we haven’t got that money so we no longer have an official team sponsor.

‘We have had our challenges in the last few years. It’s not disastrous but it is a significant loss, and something we have to try and remedy as quickly as we can.

‘To be frank we are in a fire sale situation, there is an opportunity there for somebody. But we are never going to make up the sort of money we would have got this year at this stage.’
