The Fifa World Cup had one more opportunity to break a twitter record on Sunday night, with the final between Germany and Argentina setting a new tweets-per-minute record, but failed to top Brazil’s thrashing in the semi-final stage for total amount of messages sent through the online platform.

According to Twitter data, the #GER vs #ARG #WorldCupFinal hashtags set a new record of 618,725 tweets per minute (TPM), beating the previous mark set in the Germany v Brazil match – with Sami Khedira’s goal in the 29th minute causing 580,166 TPM.

The record-breaking moment came at the final whistle which saw Germany confirmed as champions of the world.

Last night’s winning goal seven minutes from the end of extra time by German substitute Mario Gotze came in second place, generating 556,499 TPM, while the collection of the Golden Ball and Golden Glove by Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer, respectively, saw another 395,773 TPM.

The top three most tweeted German players of the night emerged with goal-scoring hero Gotze in first place, followed by Neuer and Christoph Kramer – who only found out he was playing ten minutes before kick off, before being substituted after a head injury.

However, the final was unable to top the overall record for the most number of tweets sent out in any live sporting event, with the famous 7-1 victory for the Germans in the faceoff against the hosts.

Twitter data revealed 32.1m tweets were sent out during the World Cup Final, falling short of the 35.6m tweets that flooded timelines around the world.

Meanwhile, the World Cup Final was watched by an audience of 20.64m in the UK – the BBC peaking at 10:30pm with 16.72m (61.4% share) and ITV hitting 3.96m (13.8%) at 9.45pm.
