World Masters Games 2017 has appointed London-based agency RedTorch to deliver international marketing services for its global multi-sport event, taking place in Auckland, New Zealand, in two years’ time.

Representing the event in the Northern Hemisphere, RedTorch will assist in delivering a marketing programme that aims to attract more than 6,000 international athletes to Auckland.

Held every four years, the World Masters Games is seen as a pinnacle sporting event for masters competitors worldwide. With more athletes than the Olympics, it is the world’s largest multi-sport event in terms of participation numbers.

Jonny Murch, managing director, RedTorch, said: “We’re hugely excited to be working on a multi-sport event of this scale. We have significant relationships with many stakeholders across international sport, as well as a unique understanding of how sports operate globally, which we will leverage to market the Games successfully.

“We’re looking forward to making the World Masters Games in Auckland a truly international festival, with more than 100 countries represented.”

In 2017, Auckland will welcome 25,000 competitors from 100 countries who will compete in 28 sports across 10 days at over 45 venues. For most sports there is generally no qualification criteria other than age, where the minimum age ranges from 25 to 40.

Anyone can compete, either to win or just to have fun, and a social as well as a competitive spirit is described as a strong hallmark of the Games.

Jennah Wootten, ‎chief executive, World Masters Games 2017, added: “The World Masters Games in Auckland is as much about the experience as it is the competition. We’re really looking forward to working with RedTorch to promote this incredible event to a global audience.

“For us, a major feature of the Games is the ability to compete on a world stage, and meet people who share the same interests from many diverse countries. It’s important that we grow the global masters movement and introduce even more people to this event, so that they can share in the experience.

“We can’t wait to bring the event to the global sport community, and in doing so, showcase Auckland’s stunning venues and world-class competition environment to athletes and participants.”
