WPLL (Women’s professional League Limited) becomes Women’s Super League Football (WSL), the independent company overseeing the top tiers of women’s professional football.
Today marks a new chapter for women’s football in England as Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL), the controlling body, reveals new company and league names, new emblems and a new visual identity for the women’s professional game.
The Barclays Women’s Championship will be renamed Barclays Women’s Super League 2 (Barclays WSL2) from the start of the 2025/26 season, while the top tier, the Barclays Women’s Super League (Barclays WSL), will remain unchanged, bringing both leagues under the WSL Football umbrella.
To coincide with the name changes, WSL Football has launched a new brand identity born from the movement of female footballers.
The visual identity, developed with creative agency Anomaly and inspired by on-pitch movement and insight courtesy of EA SPORTS, includes living emblems, distinct colour systems for each league, and league/company word marks.
A new WSL Football website is set to launch this summer, and the new branding will be woven into all brand touch points over the coming months ahead of the 2025/26 season – from kit, to footballs, stadiums and merchandise.
Ruth Hooper, CMO, WSL Football, said, “Developing this new visual world with Anomaly has been a real labour of love. No one plays football like a female – it is our strength and the way players move is one element of what makes women’s football distinctive and special.
As soon as this concept was brought to the table, we knew it was the right route, and we embraced it. It has taken months of work, and we have spoken to clubs, fans, players and partners who have all inputted during the process and been on this journey with us. There is a lot more in store over the coming months as we continue to grow the women’s game for the future.”
