Scarlets, Ospreys and Dragons have yet to agree to sign a new long-term deal with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), with a set deadline passing.

Welsh rugby’s future looks uncertain as three of its clubs have not confirmed their intention to sign a new long-term Professional Rugby Agreement (PRA) with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), despite a deadline for commitment having passed on Tuesday night.

The WRU had requested confirmation from the three regions by 15th April, following its recent takeover of Cardiff Rugby, which had been placed into temporary administration on 10th April.

The WRU has assumed control of the capital-based side and is seeking to implement its ‘One Wales’ strategy, which includes a revised funding structure under the PRA.

Although a five-year deal had been agreed in principle by all four professional sides in February, developments surrounding Cardiff have led to renewed concerns among the remaining regions. Scarlets, Ospreys and Dragons have not yet seen a finalised version of the PRA and have withheld confirmation.

The WRU has targeted the end of June to finalise the funding component of the agreement. A further meeting between the WRU and the four regions is scheduled for Wednesday, when the Professional Rugby Board is set to convene. Negotiations are expected to continue.

The situation unfolds as Welsh rugby continues to face structural and financial challenges, with regional player budgets already having been reduced in recent seasons.
