The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced it is launching Tennis on the Thames on the eve of The Championships at Wimbledon this summer, creating a public celebration of women both on and off the court.
Women’s tennis stars will gather on the South Bank of the River Thames on Thursday 28th June at London’s Oxo Tower and Bernie Spain Gardens for a one-day, outdoor festival that will celebrate female icons with an interactive photography exhibition, looking at the journey of each woman’s success and giving guests the opportunity to meet their heroes.
Locals and visitors will be invited to join the celebration for the tennis experience, from playing tennis on a mini pop-up court with Judy Murray or watching the Nature Valley International in Eastbourne live on a giant screen.
Fans will be able to explore the WTA photo exhibit, see the WTA world number one trophies presented by Dubai Duty Free, learn more about the players on SAP’s Match Centre, take part in a USANA group fitness session, win prizes and meet some of their favourite players with photos and autograph signings.
WTA president Micky Lawler commented on the event: “For the past 45 years the WTA has been at the forefront of change in women’s sport. From Billie Jean King fighting for gender equality to Serena Williams ushering in a new era of power and athleticism, the WTA has left an undeniable impression. The Tennis on the Thames event is a celebration of the WTA, our players and their personal accomplishments that have sparked positive change both on and off the court.”
WTA Tennis on the Thames, which fans can register for via the WTA Facebook page, is backed by the likes of Cambridge Global, Dubai Duty Free, Evian, Häagen-Dazs, Jacob’s Creek, SAP, Stella Artois and USANA.
