Welcome to Yorkshire, the organising body responsible for the Tour de France Grand Depart in 2014, which will take place in the region, has warned the government that more funding is needed to ensure the event is a success.

The Department of Media, Culture and Sport (DCMS), who initially refused the tourist agency’s request for £10m in funding, issued a statement saying: ‘The government wants the Tour De France Grand Depart 2014 to be a huge success and we are working hard, alongside the local MPs, to make that happen. However, the current plans are not strong enough to deliver the world-class event we all want and expect.’

The statement continued: ‘We would like to see a more joined-up approach to the organisation of the world’s biggest cycle race which will ensure we maximise the benefits for Yorkshire and the other parts of England the race will pass through.’

The body responsible for funding elite sport, UKS, is reportedly willing to invest more cash into the event provided that plans for the event are improved.
