The host cities for the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games look to be decided after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) unanimously voted to support a plan to name hosts for successive Games, with just Paris and Los Angeles bidding.

The IOC now wants the cities to reach an agreement on who hosts which edition by the IOC Session in Peru on 13th September, with IOC president Thomas Bach hopeful of an agreement by next month.

If there is no agreement, a vote to select just the 2024 host will be held.

Earlier this month, an IOC evaluation commission report praised both bids, claiming either city would be “more than capable” of hosting an outstanding Olympic Games.

According to media reports, Paris is believed to be the favourite to land 2024, the centenary of the last time it hosted the Olympics, going into the three-way talks. The French capital has already said it has to go first , given that the site earmarked for the Olympic Village will not be available for redevelopment after 2024.

Following the announcement at the IOC’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, LA 2024 said in a statement: “This is a proud day for Los Angeles and for the Olympic and Paralympic Movements in America. We’re thrilled with the IOC’s decision today, which is a major step forward in making LA’s Olympic dream a reality.

“Today, two of the world’s greatest cities, with outstanding but different proposals, stand ready to serve and advance the Olympic and Paralympic movements and their values. We look forward to working with the IOC and Paris in the weeks ahead to turn this golden opportunity into a golden future together.”
