Wolverhampton Wanderers have removed the wolf from their badge for one day to mark World Wildlife Day, which takes place on 3rd March 2020.

The symbolic move comes on the back of a partnership launched by the club and player Raul Jimenez with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The #ProtectThePack campaign attempts to raise funds to protect the Mexican Wolf, a species currently on the brink of extinction.

In a statement, the club said: “We’re pleased to support World Wildlife Day by removing the Wolf from our famous badge and raising the profile of a World Without Nature. We can’t imagine life without Wolves which is why we partnered with WWF Mexico last month to support their endangered wolf programme – ‘Protect the Pack’.  We are committed to the conservation of nature and we hope our efforts will amplify this important message.”

Russell Jones, Head of Marketing, Wolves, speaking at the time of the initial partnership said: “We all have a responsibility to preserve our environment, and on behalf of Wolverhampton Wanderers, I want to say how excited we are to do our part and announce this alliance with WWF Mexico.”

The club’s World Wildlife Day move has seen it take the wolf off the club’s badge across its social media channels, leaving just the old gold colour inside a hexagon, in an attempt to raise awareness of the importance of animals.

Wolves’ website asks what the world would be like without wolves, and said: “World Wildlife Day 2020 will celebrate the world’s special wild plants and animals, and raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of wildlife to people, and the threats they are facing.

“Earth is home to countless species of fauna and flora, and the rich diversity is what has made our planet inhabitable for all living creatures, including humans.

“However, unsustainable human activities and overexploitation of the species and natural resources are imperilling the world’s biodiversity – nearly a quarter of all species are presently at risk of going extinct in the coming decades.”

The club’s next fixture will be against Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday 7th March, when the wolf will again take pride of place on the club’s shirt.
