The Business Moment of the Year Award has been introduced to shine a light on the game-changing decisions that have defined the sports industry over the past 12 months, celebrating achievements that represent a significant shift in the sector’s direction of travel.
In this series, we will take a closer a look at all the shortlisted moments to see how they have had tangible impacts on the industry, and hear from some of the key decision makers sitting at the heart of sport.
In September 2024, the RFU secured a landmark £100m, 10-year sponsorship deal with global insurance giant Allianz, granting them the naming rights to the iconic home of English rugby.
As part of the agreement, Twickenham Stadium — a symbol of English sporting heritage since 1906 — will be rebranded as Allianz Stadium, marking the first time in its history that the ground has carried a commercial name.
The move, while sparking debate among traditionalists, could represent a transformative moment for the sport in the UK. The funding from the deal will be channelled into a wide range of rugby initiatives, including the development of grassroots programmes, support for community clubs, and significant investment in the women’s game — all key areas identified by the RFU as priorities for long-term sustainability and growth.
In addition to supporting on-field development, the partnership will enable the RFU to modernise and future-proof the stadium itself. Planned upgrades include enhanced fan experiences, improved accessibility, and environmentally sustainable infrastructure, aligning with broader trends in modern sports venue management.
For Allianz, the deal expands its growing presence in UK sport, adding to existing sponsorships such as Allianz Arena in Munich and Allianz Park (formerly home to Saracens Rugby Club). The Twickenham agreement underscores the company’s commitment to long-term partnerships that promote inclusion, diversity, and community engagement through sport.
The deal highlights a shifting landscape in UK sport, where commercial partnerships are essential to maintaining competitiveness on the global stage. While the name change marks the end of an era, it also signals a bold step forward — one that aims to secure the future of English rugby for generations to come.
