SUSTAINABLE SPORT DRIVEN BY LOUGHBOROUGH
Loughborough University has embedded sustainability into its world leading sports ecosystem through a suite of transformative projects delivering measurable environmental benefits. Key initiatives include Swimming Pool Decarbonisation, a £2.6m project replacing gas boilers with air-source heat pumps, cutting 350 tCO₂e annually; BUCS to Branches, linking sporting success to tree planting, with 987 trees planted and a target of 10,000 points; and The Climate Cup, engaging 2,180 athletes in climate action through gamified challenges. ISO 20121 certification ensures sustainable event management across campus, LED light replacement saving 81.5 tCO₂e. These projects collectively reduce emissions, restore nature, and inspire behavioural change, while enhancing Loughborough’s reputation as a leader in sustainable sport. Partnerships with Carbon Jacked, Veritree, and Trash Free Trails amplify impact and transparency. Together, these initiatives demonstrate how sport can drive climate action and business value, positioning Loughborough as a global leader for integrated sustainability in sport.
