Comcast will invest more than $15 million in a new accelerator to bring its media properties, including Sky Sports, and sports league partners such as NASCAR together with emerging marketing, media and technology companies.

The initial investment is in a programme called SportsTech, based in Atlanta, Georgia, which will look at eight categories such as innovations in fan engagement, events and venues, esports, and betting.

Bill Connors, President, Comcast Cable’s Central Division said: “It will allow us to see things earlier and be at the forefront rather than go pay a premium after the fact.”

Comcast’s sport broadcasters Sky Sports and NBC Sports will be involved in the project, providing feedback and integrating the startups’ tech, while the company’s venture capital arm, Comcast Ventures, will advise the accelerator.
