Blockchain-based fantasy sports gaming platform Sorare has announced deals with five English Football League (EFL) clubs – Burnley, Watford, Norwich City, Coventry City and Millwall.

The deal means that fans will be able to collect, play with and trade digital cards of the EFL Championship players.

The EFL Championship is the second-tier league within the English football pyramid. Sorare has strategically selected these clubs to join the platform to fit with its new competition that focuses on the European football leagues that sit just below the highest level.

Sorare has already secured deals with La Liga 2, the second division in Spain, as well as Germany’s Bundesliga 2 and the French Ligue 2.

The game, which is based on decentralized, open-source blockchain Ethereum, hopes to add the other 19 EFL Championship clubs in the near future to add to the ‘Second Division Europe’ competition which is designed to test player’s wider football knowledge.

Michael Meltzer, Head of Business Development at Sorare, said, “One of the things our users enjoy most about Sorare is the chance it gives them to act as a talent scout, identifying the next breakthrough stars before anyone else.”

“Many of today’s best players began their careers outside the top five leagues, and the EFL Championship is increasingly seen globally as a great source of emerging talent, so it’s important to us that our game reflects that.

“We’re delighted to bring the EFL Championship to Sorare for the first time with these partnerships and we look forward to announcing more clubs from the league in the coming months.”

Watford FC Commercial Director, Paul O’Brien, said, “We are delighted to be partnering with Sorare as Watford FC once again look to build on our innovative partnership strategy.

“We were impressed with Sorare’s ambition and strategic direction, and we look forward to working with them moving forward to help further engage with our fanbase globally through Sorare’s digital fantasy cards.”

Tynan Scope, Head of Commercial at Coventry City, said, “We’re delighted to be partnering with Sorare to offer Coventry City fans an exciting new way to engage with their favourite players and to help our club connect even more with football fans from around the world.

“We’re always looking at how strategic partnerships such as this can help us harness new technologies to enhance the fan experience and strengthen the club. Sorare’s innovative fantasy game is a great example of how online football fandom is evolving, and we’re thrilled to partner with them.”
