A new breathing-aid designed by Mercedes AMG F1 has been made freely available to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Designed to help patients with lung infections breathe when oxygen masks do not provide enough aid, the revised device design consumes 70% less oxygen than the earlier model.

The product was created by Mercedes in conjunction with University College London, and is part of a wider scheme undertaken by all seven UK-based F1 teams.

Mercedes says that 40 of its machines which produce F1 car pistons and turbochargers are being used to produce the devices. The team says its entire Brixworth facility had been repurposed for the initiative.
