Wasps have announced the signing of their first ever ‘virtual’ player – 13-year-old cancer survivor Alexander Goodwin.
Goodwin, who is from Dunton Bassett in Leicestershire, was a keen rugby player before developing a rare form of bone and soft tissue cancer.
After battling the condition for four years, he travelled to the US for pioneering treatment. Following successful surgery, he spent years in a wheelchair but is now able to walk again,
Wasps, with partner Vodafone, will give Goodwin the opportunity to virtually train with his favourite player, Jimmy Gopperth, before being included in the team’s matchday squad for its Gallagher Premiership match against Harlequins on Sunday 31st January.
Using Vodafone’s body-worn camera technology Goodwin will arrive with the team and be part of the warm-up, before watching the game.
Wasps Rugby Men’s Head Coach Lee Blackett said: “It is fantastic to be able to welcome Alex into our squad this week as we build up to our game against Harlequins this Sunday. I hope he enjoys the chance to see some of what goes on behind the scenes.
“His bravery through his illness is an inspiration to us all, so it is great that we can give him the chance to do something like this with us.”
Alex’s dad Jeff Goodwin added: “This is amazing for Alex. He has endured so much and still has many battles to fight but he can now walk with the aid of sticks. He wanted to watch a live match again – this is the next best thing and he will be a part of it.”
