In the most expected story of the weekend, Max Verstappen secured his third successive driver’s title in Formula 1, but there were some surprises in boxing and football as Leigh Wood and Arsenal were both victorious.

MAX RACES TO CHAMPIONSHIP WIN

Lewis Hamilton retired after a first-lap crash with Mercedes team-mate George Russell before newly crowned world champion Max Verstappen eased to victory in the Qatar Grand Prix.

Having confirmed his third successive drivers’ title in Saturday’s Sprint at the Losail International Circuit, Verstappen dealt with unprecedented tyre regulations – brought in for the race amid safety concerns – to ease to victory from pole position ahead of McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

Verstappen’s task was made more simple when Russell and Hamilton, starting second and third on the grid, respectively, collided at the first corner, leaving the seven-time world champion stricken in the gravel and his team-mate at the back of the field.

Last week, Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula 1 Team (AMF1 Team) renewed and extended its partnership with title sponsor Cognizant.

TITLE RACE TAKES EARLY TWIST

In the biggest game of the Premier League weekend, Arsenal defeated champions Manchester City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

With the two sides both missing key players, the cagey encounter was broken open in the late stages of the second half, when Gabriel Martinelli’s shot deflected of Nathan Ake’s head to beat Ederson and give the Gunners the lead.

The victory marks Mikel Arteta’s first Premier League over Pep Guardiola and send Arsenal above the treble winners in the table.

The Premier League recently agreed a rights renewal with French broadcaster Canal+.

KOHLI TURNS UP IN INDIA

Virat Kohli made a crucial 85 as World Cup hosts India overcame an early collapse to begin their campaign with a six-wicket win over Australia.

Steve Smith (46) and David Warner (41) top-scored in Australia’s total of 199 after they won the toss and batted.

India were in trouble after the loss of early wickets left them teetering on 2-3 before Kohli and KL Rahul rebuilt.

Kohli was caught at mid-wicket off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood (3-38) but Rahul (97 not out) saw India home.

Kohli recently became the latest sports star to join the UIM E1 World Championship, a new all-electric race boat series.

SCOTS PACK THEIR BAGS

Scotland are out of the Rugby World Cup after they were dismantled by Ireland.

Ireland’s 36-14 win was their 17th consecutive victory and ensures that the world’s number one side finish top of Pool B to set up a meeting with New Zealand next Saturday.

Scottish Rugby recently renewed its partnership with British whisky brand The Famous Grouse after a six-year hiatus.

TWO REDS AS CHELSEA STEAL POINT

Defending WSL champions Chelsea scored deep into stoppage time to draw with Manchester City in the Women’s Super League after two costly dismissals for the home side.

Guro Reiten poked in from close range after a scramble in the box to make it 1-1 in the 96th minute to cancel out Chloe Kelly’s opener, after Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp were both sent off for City.

Last week, the FA agreed a licensing partnership with Panini to create the first ever Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) football sticker collection.

WOOD SHOCKS WITH KNOCKOUT BLOW

Leigh Wood claimed a stunning knockout victory over Josh Warrington to retain his WBA featherweight title in Sheffield.

Warrington had dominated up to the seventh round, but then a thunderous left from Wood was followed by a flurry to leave the Leeds boxer on his back.

Matchroom Boxing recently announced an agreement with Rakuten Ticket, Inc. and international company Never Say Never (NSN) that will bring a series of major events to Japan.
