Arsenal are reportedly considering a significant expansion to the Emirates Stadium, which would see capacity rise to 80,000.

According to Bloomberg, ‘preliminary discussions are underway’ to expand the ground that currently holds 60,704.

A potential rise to a capacity of 80,000 would see the Emirates Stadium become the largest club ground in London, taking over the 62,850-seater Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

An expansion to a 80,000 capacity would see the Emirates become the largest club ground in London.

Any expansion is thought to be mainly motivated by the increased matchday revenue opportunity, which is as important as ever in the era of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), meaning that Premier League club finances are being more closely monitored by the league.

However, with the stadium being in a densely populated area, and the expected requirement to find a temporary home ground for the teams, Arsenal will face numerous challenges for the development to materialise.

Arsenal first begun playing in the Emirates Stadium, which is based in Holoway, London, after completion of building work in 2006. It was estimated to have costed £360m.

In 2024, the stadium also became the official home of Arsenal Women.

In August 2023, Arsenal extended its partnership with Emirates, in what became the longest running front-of-shirt sponsorship in Premier League history, and included the renewal of the stadium naming rights.
