Everton FC has been docked a further two points for breaches of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), marking the club’s second points penalty of the season.
An independent Commission appointed by the English top-flight deemed that the Toffees had exceeded the PSR’s allowed loss limit over three years by £16.6m in its 2022/23 accounts.
Everton was previously struck with a 10-point sanction in November for breaches relating to the 2021/22 campaign, when the club’s losses reached £124.5m, exceeding the permitted limit by £19.5m. This was later reduced to six points in February.
The club now drops to 16th in the table on 27 points, just two points above the relegation zone.
Everton confirmed it would be appealing against the sanctions in an official statement, citing ‘significant mitigating circumstances’ of the war in Ukraine, as well as the club’s co-operation with the league throughout the process.
The statement said, ‘Everton remains committed to working collaboratively with the League on all matters relating to PSR but is extremely concerned by the inconsistency of different commissions in respect of points deductions applied.
‘The club and its legal representatives have begun the preparations to appeal the Commission’s decision.’
If Everton submits an official appeal, the final decision will be due by 25th May, the week after the Premier League season’s end on 19th May.
Everton is one of two Premier League teams to have been punished for PSR breaches this season, after Nottingham Forest recently received a four-point deduction for violations also related to 2022/23. The East Midlands club launched an appeal last month, which is currently ongoing.
