The Lionesses can hold their heads up high as a thrilling tournament came to an end on Sunday. The Spanish were the big winners of the weekend but celebrations will also be in order for Katarina Johnson-Thompson, West Ham United, and Viktor Hovland…

England’s wait to win a first Women’s World Cup title goes on after Spain beat the Lionesses 1-0 in the final in Sydney.

Spain captain Olga Carmona slotted the winner past goalkeeper Mary Earps in the first half, capitalising after England’s Lucy Bronze lost possession in midfield.

England manager Sarina Wiegman, who has now lost two successive World Cup finals, introduced Lauren James and Chloe Kelly at half-time but Spain maintained control despite the Lionesses’ best efforts.

Earps, who won the Golden Glove award as best goalkeeper at the tournament, made several stunning saves, none better than from the penalty spot to deny Jenni Hermoso in the second half.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson claimed a stunning heptathlon gold at the World Championships in Budapest to complete a remarkable turnaround in her career.

The Briton, now a two-time world champion, feared injury may end her career just months after her 2019 win.

But Johnson-Thompson, whose Achilles rupture four years ago marked the start of a difficult period, has rediscovered her spark and this gold is her reward.

She defended a narrow lead over Anna Hall in a captivating final 800m event.

West Ham United claimed a rousing 3-1 London derby win against big-spending Chelsea despite playing almost 30 minutes with 10 men.

The Hammers, who sold their captain Declan Rice in the summer, took the lead in the first-half through a Nayef Aguerd header, and an assist from Rice-replacement James Ward-Prowse.

Chelsea equalised through Carney Chukwuemeka before Michail Antonio reclaimed West Ham’s lead. Despite Aguerd receiving a red card for a second bookable offence in the 67th minute, the Lucas Paqueta scored a penalty in the closing stages to secure the win for the home side.

Last week, West Ham United and Lyca Mobile agreed a multi-year extension to long-standing partnership that will include the women’s team.

England forward Billy Vunipola was sent off as Ireland scored five tries on the road top defeating the English 29-10 in Dublin.

Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose, James Lowe, Mack Hansen and Keith Earls all crossed for the world’s number one-ranked side.

Vunipola was dismissed just before Ireland’s third try for a high tackle.

England, who were missing captain Owen Farrell amid his ongoing disciplinary saga, managed one late try in reply through Kyle Sinckler.

Viktor Hovland birdied seven of his final nine holes to roar past overnight leaders Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler and win the BMW Championship by two strokes at Olympia Fields.

The Norwegian, 25, began the day three shots behind world number one Scheffler and England’s Fitzpatrick.

But he carded a career-low nine-under 61 to set a new course record and claim the $3.6m (£2.8m) winner’s cheque.

Welsh Fire kept themselves in the race for a place in The Hundred knockout stages with a nervy six-wicket win over London Spirit.

The bowlers were on top throughout in a low-scoring contest with Spirit slumping to 19-4 and 43-5 before a recovery of sorts took them to 109-9.

Fire then slipped to 15-3 before Jonny Bairstow and Tom Abell got the chase back on track.

A late flurry got Fire over the line with seven balls to spare.

The Hundred announced a new partnership with Compare the Market in July.
