The new year kicked off with another great weekend of sport. We have taken a look back to bring you some of the highlights, with a nod to the latest updates from off the pitch…


In the Premier League title race Manchester City and Newcastle United both slipped up with draws to Everton and Leeds United respectively as Arsenal extended their lead at the top with a 2-4 victory over Brighton.

Despite the wins on the pitch, Arsenal revealed significant financial losses in December.


Saracens took their lead at the top of the Premiership back to 10 points with a dominant win over rivals Exeter.

Exeter Chiefs announced a new partnership with Bristol Street Motors for the 2022/23 season in November.


Emma Raducanu made a winning start to 2023 with victory over teenager Linda Fruhvirtova in her opening match at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

Raducanu came through 4-6 6-4 6-2 against the 17-year-old Czech star in a rain-affected match.

The 2021 US Open champion will be looking for a strong 2023 following an underwhelming year in the aftermath of her shock win at Flushing Meadows.

This year, Sky Sports has secured the UK broadcasting rights for the US Open.


Michael van Gerwen will face England’s Michael Smith in the final of the PDC World Darts Championship after both secured victories over the weekend.

Smith overcame a stern test from Germany’s Gabriel Clemens to win his semi-final 6-2 at Alexandra Palace.

Van Gerwen is chasing his fourth world title and was too good for former World Matchplay champion Dimitri Van den Bergh, thrashing the Belgian 6-0.

The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) announced last year that Betfred will remain as title sponsor of the Betfred World Matchplay until at least the end of the 2025 event.


New AFC Bournemouth owners Bill Foley and Michael B Jordan were in attendance at Selhurst Park to see their new side lose 2-0 to Crystal Palace in a disappointing final match of 2022 for the Cherries.

The south coast club was taken over by a consortium led by Las Vegas-based businessman Foley in December.


Novak Djokovic returned to Australia as he made a rare doubles appearances at the Adelaide International, ahead of his Grand Slam tennis comeback down under.

The Serb was deported prior to the 2022 Australian Open because of his Covid-19 vaccination status.

Djokovic’s three-year visa ban was overturned in November, allowing him to enter the country and compete in the upcoming 2023 Australian Open.

Despite missing the Australian Open, Djokovic still had a impressive 2022, notably retaining his Wimbledon title.

In December, The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced a long-term extension of its exclusive media rights and commercial representation partnership for The Championships, Wimbledon, with IMG.
